What Is a Golden Visa

A Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment program that allows individuals and families to obtain legal residency in another country through a qualifying financial investment — commonly a real estate purchase, an investment fund subscription, a business investment, or a government bond or donation. These programs are commonly used for residency in Europe, second residency strategies, and global mobility planning. Each program has its own strict document requirements that must be completed correctly before submission.

Apostille Requirements for Golden Visa Applications

The documents requiring authentication depend on the specific program and receiving authority. For countries that are parties to the Apostille Convention, eligible U.S. documents may be legalized through an apostille. A state apostille is generally required for birth certificates, marriage certificates, affidavits, and notarized documents; a federal apostille is required for FBI background checks when requested. Destinations that are not parties to the Apostille Convention — such as the UAE — may require a separate authentication or legalization route. Incorrect apostille processing is one of the most common reasons for delays or rejection.

An apostille authenticates the official signature and seal on a document — it does not certify the truth of investment information, source-of-funds representations, or guarantee residence approval.

• FBI background check, if required — when required: federal apostille (Convention destinations) or federal authentication/legalization (non-Hague destinations); original must not be notarized; state apostille not a substitute; see FBI section below
• Birth certificate — official certified copy from issuing custodian required; notarized photocopy not a substitute
• Marriage certificate — official certified copy from issuing custodian required
• Passport copies — not automatically apostilled; confirm any authentication requirement with the receiving authority
• Proof of investment — format and authentication depend on program and receiving authority requirements

FBI Background Check Apostille for Golden Visa

Many Golden Visa programs require a criminal background check. When required, the original FBI background check must not be notarized and a state apostille is not a substitute. For destinations that are parties to the Apostille Convention, the federal record is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. For destinations that are not parties to the Convention — such as the UAE — a separate federal authentication or legalization route applies instead. Golden Visa applications typically require proof of investment and source of funds, which may include bank letters, investment statements, real estate purchase documents, corporate documents, and tax documentation. Many of these documents must be notarized and may also require apostille depending on the program and receiving authority. Confirm the specific requirements with your immigration advisor before preparing documents.

Notarization

Notarization: In-House or Online

Many Golden Visa documents must be notarized before apostille. Notarization can be completed in-house at our office in person. Remote Online Notarization (RON) is available where permitted by the signer's location, the document type, and the issuing state's rules — and where the receiving authority accepts RON-notarized documents. RON is commonly used for affidavits, financial declarations, power of attorney documents, and other supporting paperwork.

Language

Certified Translations for Golden Visa Documents

Most Golden Visa programs require documents to be translated into the official language of the destination country. Translation requirements vary by program and receiving authority — some require a sworn or officially recognized translator in the destination country, and a standard U.S. certified translation may not be accepted. Confirm the exact translation format and qualification requirements with the receiving authority before ordering.
